June Jordan was born in Harlem, New York on July 9, 1936. Jordan fostered a love of literature and writing poetry as a child. She attended Barnard College and University of Chicago. E. Ethelbert Miller was born in Brooklyn, New York on 20 November 1950. He attended New York City public schools, and enrolled at Howard University in the fall of 1968. Mr. Miller graduated from Howard University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in African American Studies.
